• Be familiar with the basic procedures involved with the test method.
• Understand the specific requirements for the technique and be able to properly select the procedure.
• Understand the advantages and disadvantages of the test method.
• Understand basic Metallurgy where related to NDT and the material tested.

You will be able to:

• Use the different types of penetrant products available to industry.
• Decide on the necessary items and products required to complete the job.
• Follow a proper and authorized testing procedure.
• Understand and recognize the typical surface discontinuities, flaws or irregularities.
• Use the Black and White ‘lights’ properly as needed.
• Analyze the project situation and results required.
• Be prepared to interpret results with a senior technician.

Key Points of Course – Level 1 and 2

Equipment discussed, including:

• Your ability to understand various types and the functions of standard equipment.
• Penetrant Facilities and their types, application and their use including Fluorescent, Wet and Dry methods, Portable and fixed units. Blacklight - checks and calibrations.

Surface Preparing, including:

• Degreasing processes, surface scale and paints removal.

Penetrants:

• Their purpose, preparation, application and specific types – Water Washable, Post-emusifiable, Visible.

Washing, Cleaning:

• Including knowledge for Coarse, stream spraying or dipping, liquid types and temperatures.

Developers:

• Purpose, types and procedures for use – Wet or Dry and time allottments.

Inspections:

• With white or blacklight, filters and viewing environments.
• Effects likely to encounter with various surfaces – cracks, porosity/pinholes, seams, shuts and machine marks and non-relevant indications.

Techniques:

• Standards to follow and appraisal of the inspected piece(s).
