- Understand and be familiar (review) the safety precautions required for radiation hazards.
- Be familiar with the different types of parts tested.
- Be familiar with the basic procedures involved with the test method.
- Understand the specific requirements for the technique and be able to properly select the procedure.
- Understand the advantages and disadvantages of the test method.
- Understand basic Metallurgy where related to NDT and the material tested.
You will be able to:
- Be aware of the different types of equipment and products available to industry with regards to radiation method.
- Decide on the necessary items and products required to complete the job.
- Determine a proper and authorized testing procedure.
- Understand and recognize the typical surface and sub-surface discontinuities, flaws or irregularities.
- Use the X-ray and Gamma ray technique in locating discontinuities.
- Analyze the project situation and results required.
- Be prepared to interpret performance results.
Key Points of Course – Level II
Equipment employed, including:
- Your knowledge and ability to use various types and the functions of standard equipment.
- Portable and stationary, automatic and manual types of equipment, application and use including isotopes used and x-ray tubes (limits). Safety precautions and practices for all related radiation generating ‘tools’.
Principles and Purposes:
- Review the theory of radioactivity including some local, provincial and federal requirements in various countries.
Radiation Safety:
- Types of x-rays/gamma rays sources. Required procedure sensitivity, intensity, shielding and working distances.
- Detection devices and primary, secondary (acute/latent) effects and absorption characteristics, dose and safety codes.
Procedure/Techniques:
- Image and geometry principles including – focal spot, electromagnetic spectrum, film types/characteristics, screens and filters, image quality indicators (penetrameters) and factors, processing.
Evaluation Techniques and Standards:
- Discontinuity and Defect identification including film viewing. The use of industry standards and their applicability to the test method.
